Simulation games don’t always need grand objectives or world-ending stakes to keep players invested. Sometimes, the draw is much closer to home: perfecting a bowl of ramen, turning fabric into a custom dress, or watching a little plant shop grow into a space of your own. The appeal lies in the process itself, where every task has its own rhythm, and even the smallest details can make a difference.
For the first part of our October 2026 Steam Discovery showcase, we selected six indie games that explore this side of simulation in very different ways. Some turn familiar jobs into high-pressure challenges, while others make room for creativity and slower, more personal forms of progression. From managing a kitchen full of surprises to tending an apiary among the clouds, this lineup shows just how much character a job or hobby can bring to a game.

Sous Raccoon
Chef hired a raccoon as his sous chef, and now you’re one bad shift away from unemployment. Survive chaotic restaurant runs, unlock upgrades, and adapt to changing kitchens while trying to stay on your boss’ good side.
“We’d hire this raccoon again, but we’re definitely asking about Chef’s temper before signing another employment contract.”

Japanese Ramen Simulator
Prepare ingredients, perfect your ramen, and run a restaurant your way in this shop management sim for up to six players. Between demanding critics, kitchen fires, and thieves targeting the register, there’s a lot to handle beyond getting the noodles just right.
“Six people, one ramen shop, and shuriken for emergencies? We’d like to think we’re here for the cooking, but this sounds like a shift our group chat was made for.”
SMALL BUSINESS, BIG CREATIVE ENERGY: BESPOKE DRESSES VS. HOUSEPLANT RETAIL
From cutting fabric to arranging the perfect shelf of greenery, these shop sims let creativity take the lead.

Dressmaker
Choose fabrics, cut patterns, sew garments, and add the finishing touches in a dressmaking sim inspired by the real craft. Create custom outfits for townsfolk, build your reputation, and decide if you’re making customers happy or giving their wardrobes a little sabotage.
“We came for the custom dresses, stayed for the creative freedom, and will absolutely be petting the shop cat between commissions.”

Leafy Corner
Run a little plant shop filled with real-life greenery, from growing and caring for more than 100 plants to helping customers find their ideal leafy companions. Fulfill orders, discover plant variegations, and customize your shop with furniture, pots, and decorations.
“For the plant people who keep saying they have room for one more, here’s a whole shop to fill without having to rearrange your actual apartment.”
SMALL SANCTUARY, BIG FRONTIER: SKYBOUND APIARY VS. DESKTOP MAGIC
A caretaker has an entire sky of islands to explore, while one cat has a library full of spells to learn.

Island Beekeeper
Build an apiary on floating islands, crossbreed bees with unique traits, and grow crops to support your skybound home. Send honey to a struggling Earth while exploring new biomes and uncovering what happened to the beekeepers who traveled to these islands before you.
“We’d go to the ends of the Earth for good honey, but apparently this game wants us going above the clouds and solving a missing-beekeeper mystery, too.”

Black Cat Book Club
Keep a magical library on your desktop and help a black cat work through ancient tomes, decipher glyphs, and unlock spells. Customize your feline companion and decorate the tower to create a cozy little study space that stays with you while you work or relax.
“A little black cat studying ancient magic on our desktop? Sorry, productivity. We’ve got a new coworker, and they’re much cuter.”
